Ah, Sonic 3! Part one of a story
that was too big for one game! The first half of the Angel Island story starts
out with a bang, literally, as my Death Egg crashes and I get launched into
another bout for world conquest! Read on for the review...
STORY - 9/10:
Now this is originality. After the Death Egg crashed on Angel Island, I plotted
to use repair it, and what's more, steal the Master Emerald! To do this, I
tricked that gullible goofball of a gaurdien, Knuckles, into beleiving I was
the "good guy" and that Sonic and Tails were villains! This began
one of my most ingenious plans ever...
GAMEPLAY - 8/10: Loads o' modes! First off, you've got your standard adventure,
which can be played as Sonic and Tails, Sonic alone, or Tails alone. The special
stages have a new feel to them, and a new concept was introduced- BONUS stages,
where various prizes could be won in a gumball mini game. The 2-player vs.
mode was fun as expected. A great feature this game had was lock-on capabilities
with Sonic & Knuckles, which would make Knuckles playable in this game!
SOUND - 7/10: Sonic 3's music was okay. Not too great, but definetely
worth listening to. The only really outstanding song from the soundtrack was
the theme for Ice Cap Zone, though I've gotta say I found Hydrocity Zone Act
2 to be catchy too.
GRAPHICS - 8/10: Sonic Team, at this point, was doing very well to
take advantage of the Genesis's graphic abilities. The palletes were a lot
richer and more colorful this time.
REPLAY
VALUE - 8/10: With so many various things to do, you'll be playing this
one for awhile. Even after you've done everything, it's a good game to play
over again. The save menu is also a nice touch.
AMOUNT OF EGGMAN - 9/10: I did have a great role in this game... Tricking
Knuckles, battling Sonic in my mechs, and repairing my Death Egg gave me a
pretty decent part as far as this game goes.
OVERALL - 8/10: Highly reccomended. One of the best Sonic games out there.
CHANGES FROM JAPAN TO AMERICA: Again, my name got changed to "Robotnik!"
But aside from that, no character names were changed. They even used the original
Badnik names this time around! One interesting note was that this was the
first instruction manual to refer to the planet as "Mobius". Which,
I cannot stress enough, is an unofficial SoA plot not made by Sonic Team.
Review's over, get outta here!
