Release Follow-Up
Stop the presses, folks! What we have here is Eggman's
greatest role to date, arguably. What will follow is a brief review of
Eggman's backstory and aplayable abilities, and further down a summary of his
role in the game as a whole. Be warned- Spoilers follow!
For Starters
The plot begins two years after Eggman's mysterious disappearance. He's
missing, and even presumed dead. What's in store for Eggman this time...?
Eggman's Playability
Well, obviously, Eggman's still alive and kicking! Playable in chapters
4 and 5, the Doc has some great playable potential here.
Basic Movement
 |
Eggman
has average running speed on the overworld, and like any other character,
can be switched to your primarily-controlled overworld party member.
The Doctor has no specific moveset abilities, but he makes up for it with
his merry prancing across the land.
Just look at him go! |
|
Attack
|
 |
Eggman's
basic attack is throwing a wrench at his foes.
Because he's such a tough character, he can only attack once per round,
but his wrenches pack a punch, and do sufficient damage to the enemy!
Talk about throwing a wrench in the works! |
|
POW Move: Bombardment
|
 |
Bombardment is one of the most
powerful and easy to pull off POW moves in the entire game!
Eggman sends a rain of bombs down onto the enemy party, dealing heavy damage
to everyone- Additionally, the attack can't be evaded!
Perhaps the best part about this move is that Eggman performs what looks
like a rain dance to summon the explosive shower.
This proves what EE knew all along: Eggman is a master dancer. |
|
POW Move: Sabotoge
|
 |
A team-up move with Tails- Eggman
calls the studious young fox to his aide to take on robotic foes.
If the action sequence is entered correctly, the Doctor and his assisstant
stand an 80% chance of defeated their robotic enemy instantly, and
that's just at the beginning. If you level the move up to its highest, it
has a 100% effective rate.
Eggman can build 'em, and he can shut 'em down too! |
Eggman's Story
Role
(If it wasn't obvious enough, SPOILERS ahead.)
So, onto Eggman's role in the story!
You don't see him in chapters 1 and 2, but there are hints that he's still around
working behind the scenes... He first enters the story in a big way in...
Chapter 3
Titled "Egghunt", this chapter has the
heroes in search of Dr. Eggman to ask about his technology's involvement in
the moving of Angel Island. The heroes go all over until they reach Eggman's
new base and fight his new and improved Swatbots.
He first appears calling off his Swatbot MK IIs.

He tells the heroes he's reformed,
but they don't buy it.

As it turns out, the Marauders are using his old outdated machines without his
consent- Eggman's furious, as no one messes with his old robots...

Indeed, they were made two years ago, when he was
young and... full of beans? I guess it's a regional expression.

I love how smug he is in this game.

Chapter 4
Eggman's playable at this point! The chapter picks
up in Green Hill Zone with Eggman explaining his stance.

How'd Eggman survive the attack in the game's intro?
Let him explain.

With no further questions, he joins your party-
You're free to explore Green Hill, Central City, and Mystic Ruins, the areas
you've been to already. Blue Ridge Zone is now open as well, and whenever you're
ready, you can head up there.
Once you arrive, you battle Shadow, who joins
you after you defeat him. Not but a few minutes later, you battle Shade, who
runs away as soon as she loses. Eggman then decides to sneak into his ruined
city using an old abandonned tunnel system the Marauders don't know about.
Chapter 5
Arriving in Eggman's ruined Metropolis base, the
gang splits up into teams- Sonic and Knuckles lead one team, while Eggman and
Tails lead another. The player can choose the other two members on each. Eventually,
Eggman and Tails need to find a cannon to shoot down enemy aircraft.
They find the cannon.

And a boss guarding it.

Later still, Sonic and Knuckles get their heads
handed to them by , the game's villain. Fortunately, Eggman fixes the teleporter
in the nick of time, and arrives with Tails and the gang to blast the Marauders
back.

However, Ix manages to steal the Master Emerald
and Angel Island plummets onto Metropolis, destroying most of what was left
of it.
Omega is also an optional character you can look
for in this chapter... But why bother?
Chapter 6
Eggman and Tails deduce that Sonic and the gang
need to follow the Marauders into the Twilight Cage, and get to work on a Dimensional
Buffer. But while they're working, Sonic and friends need to activate power
generators around the base. Eventually, they meet one of Eggman's out-of-control
robots. I won't spoil what it is, but Eggman's comments will serve as a hint.

Eggman prepares for dimensional transport!

And announces he's going to stay behind this time-
I won't spoil every dialog outcome, but this one really shows how cool-headed
Eggman is toward Sonic.

(Resized to avoid a formatting issue. Click to enlarge.)
So why is he staying behind? You'll see!
Chapters 7, 8, 9, and 10
The heroes go through the Twilight Cage and defeat Ix before returning home,
yadda yadda. What we care about is the ending.
Ending
The heroes arrive to discover... Eggman has
taken over the world.

He proceeds to shoot down their ship, and then
Sonic and Tails cut to a credits sequence where they note that the Twilight
Cage's time compression must've been such that many years passed on Earth despite
spending a short while away from it. After the credits, we see this image.

And then the game ends- I smell a sequel.
In short, this is Eggman's best game to date-
A must-have for Eggman fans! Get it! Get it now!
