Eggman Lookalikes
by Doc Eggman

Greetings, this is my first article, and one you'll hopefully find informative. This article deals with characters who bear more than a passing similarity to yours truly- Characters that existed both before AND after my debut. Let's take a look see. Yosh!

BEFORE The Beginning

Before the charatcres listed, we need to pay a bit of attention to an important man.

Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt. Note the glasses, comically large nose, and mustache! This was the source of many a charicature in early cartoons, and it's widely accepted that he influenced my design. Look further for progression of this...

Before Dr. Eggman

Characters who I resemble, that debuted before I did. Might I have been based on them? Perhaps.

Mechanic (Real name unknown)

This guy appeared in the movie, Ai No Shiro Laputa. His name never was mentioned, and all that is known is that he's a mechanic. But the similarities are astounding. The big glasses, bald head, huge mustache. All traits I would later possess, not to mention- He's a MECHANIC! He's good with machines, as I am. I have a sneaking suspicion the bosses over at Sonic Team are fans of Miyazaki, because a LOT of his movies have characters who look like me, as you'll see later. (Also, Big the Cat appears to be based on Totoro, another of Miyazaki's works...)

Unknown

He appeared in an 80's manga called Juliet. From what I gather, he was the main character's perverted next-door neighbor. According to what little information on it there is, it was only translated into Spanish- No English version exists. The resemblence is less prevelent than the above example, but still worth mentioning.

Egghead

Egghead was a villain in the 60's Batman series, and was a genius criminal who used eggs in all his attacks. In a sense, this is the man that paved the way for evil egg-themed geniusus, and I owe him my gratitude for his groundbreaking debut. More info on Egghead can be found here.

Dr. Wily

Wily is a genius bent on conquering the world with his battallion of robots. Sound familiar? Debuting just a few years before myself, Dr. Wily's definetely a villain to respect. Leading baddie of the Rockman/Megaman series, and similarly, has an annoying blue pest of his own to deal with.

Eggman Enters

Before I was to be a villain, I was to be... a HERO. Yes, my role was once to be Sega's mascot, before Sonic was chosen. Here is the concept art of what I WOULD have looked like.

Sega, upon giving Sonic the star role, liked my design so much that rather than discarding it, used me as Sonic's rival. And there I've been his enemy ever since. However, following my debut came others that resembled me...

After Eggman

These guys entered the scene after I did, but look similar to me. Read on.

Wario

I knows that nose has been used somewhere- Ah yes, on ME! Wario's big pink nose and large mustache, on top of being released just after I was, seem to be a clear reference to me. While certainly no genius, he's still a dastardly evildoer like myself.

Porco Rosso

Another Miyazaki Film, Porco Rosso features another rotund mustached guy. While he bears less resmblance than most, the main facial features are worth nothing, and it's interesting he was an expert with flying and mechanics, as well as the fact that he debuted shortly after I did, only a year at that.

Dr. Breckenridge

Breckenridge is from the anime Spirit of Wonder, released the same year as Porco Rosso, 1992. While not much physical resemblance is there, the "fat genius with glasses and mustache" motif is used, and interestingly enough, he was voiced by Deem Bristow in the dubbed version, the same man who voiced me in the English SA games. You can listen to a clip here.

The Scotsman

The Scotsman, of Samurai Jack, looks very much like AoStH Robotnik. The pointy head, orange mustache, all there.

Kamaji

Miyazaki continues his character design (which looks much like the mechanic from Laputa) in Spirited Away. Aside from the face, which looks EXACTLY like me, the body appears to be that of some monster. Additionally, he melts down scrap metal all day with an army of soot creatures, reenforcing the engineer connection.

I hope you've enjoyed the article! YOSH!

If you know of OTHER similarities I might've missed, tell me! Email me at doceggman@gmail.com!

Manga-Gaga did a similar article- It can be viewed here.
